Model of glass architecture
Clear, float glass, yellow pasted and cut, signed Cigler, created in 1981, 15.5 × 35.5 × 20 cm (Zí)
After studying at the Glassmaking Secondary School in Nový Bor, he studied in the studio of prof. Kaplický at the AAAD in Prague, where he graduated in 1957. Between the years 1965 and 1979, he led the studio he founded, focusing on glass in architecture at the AFAAD in Bratislava. To a certain extent, this focus is characteristic of his artistic intent. At the end of the 1960s, he got the idea of getting rid of all historicisms. This entailed finding and using optical glass, which he started to use in his work. Characteristic for Cígler is finding basic shapes for his objects, their character and relationship to the surrounding world, using minimal artistic means.
Václav Cigler created a series of sculptures that he called “Spatial studies of glass architecture” at the beginning of the 1980s. By pasting panel glass together, the author created abstract geometric models, the shapes of which evoke architecture. The Model on offer is a gallery example of this approach to glass.
